In the summer, many people notice that some people are more likely to attack mosquitoes than others. It turns out that mosquitoes are gel of their “victims” by accident – they are attracted to certain scents, body temperature, sweat, even the color of the clothes. According to pediatrician Darya Vlasenko, certain physiological features and habits of people can turn you into a real mosquito magnet.
Blood group and body odor are important factors
Research shows that mosquitoes have a “favorite” blood group – they usually choose people with the first blood type. However, blood type is just one factors. A very important and individual body odor, which is formed from sweat, bacteria living on the skin and other volatile substances.
According to the doctor, people whose skin microbiomas are less diverse attracts more mosquitoes. For example, bacteria such as Staphylococcusdistinguishes the compounds that mosquitoes interpret as a sign that it is a delicious “food”.
In addition, substances such as lactic acid, ammonia and carbon dioxide (CO₂) are excreted through sweat and breathing, which can smell from a distance of 30 meters. The release of these substances is enhanced by physical activity, heat, fever or hormonal changes.
What more mosquitoes are gel more often?
- Pregnant women: Body temperature rises, blood flow is accelerated, Co₂ is more secreted – all of which do the pregnant mosquitoes.
- Athletes: Body temperature rises after exercise, sweating increases, more lactic acid is excreted – all of which attract mosquitoes.
- Drinking alcohol: Even one glass of beer increases the likelihood of being stunned – alcohol affects metabolism and skin temperature.

How does clothing and odors affect the attention of mosquitoes?
The color of the clothes also affects – mosquitoes see black, navy blue and red, so light shades – white, beige or pastel – should be chosen.
Smells are also important: floral and fruit aromas attract mosquitoes, so it is better to avoid such perfume or cosmetics. Meanwhile, the scents of coconut, eucalyptus or lavender discourage insects.
Why do mosquitoes gel more often children?
Children’s skin microbiomas is not yet fully formed, so their skin has a smaller variety of bacteria – it is like an invitation to mosquitoes. In addition, children react less often to the first sting, so the mosquito has more time to vacuum blood. Also, children’s body temperature is naturally higher, while active games outdoors stimulate breathing and sweating are the main landmark landmarks.
How to protect yourself? Avoid dark clothing, use natural repellents, and do not take off after sports or walks. When choosing perfumes or body care products, give priority to lavender or eucalyptus. And remember, even small details can determine whether you will become a dinner menu for mosquitoes.
