Population rejects expansion of the House, which can cost R $ 64.6 million annually to public coffers
76% of Brazilians oppose the increase in the number of federal deputies from 513 to 531, according to the Datafolha poll released this Thursday (17.jun.2025). The proposal has already been approved in the House and awaits vote in the Senate.
According to the survey, only 20% support the expansion of the number of parliamentarians, while 2% could not answer and 1% declared themselves indifferent to the question.
The study interviewed 2,004 people 16 years or older on June 10 and 11. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
Understand the proposal
The PLP (Complementary Bill) proposes the creation of 18 new chairs in the House of Representatives. It was approved on May 6, 2025 and should be analyzed by the Senate later this week.
The initiative fulfills a determination of the Supreme Court (STF) of 2023. The Court established the period of June 30, 2025 for the National Congress to adapt to the current composition of the Chamber to population changes in the country.
The proposal approved by the deputies, instead of redistributing the existing vacancies, creates new chairs, which will be distributed among the states that had population growth. Thus, no current bench will be reduced.
According to the Board of Directors of the House, the creation of each vacancy for deputy may have an annual impact of approximately R $ 3.6 million. The increase of 18 deputies in Congress would cost R $ 64.6 million per year to public coffers.
The complementary bill, authored by the deputy (Union-RJ), determines that the House must update the number of deputies every 4 years, according to censuses made in the 2nd year of each legislature.
