The Attorney General of the Union () signed a court agreement for the payment of compensation to the family of journalist Vladimir Herzog (1937-1975), murdered at the premises of the DOI-Codi (Internal Defense Operations Center) in São Paulo, in October 1975, during the military period (1964-1985).
The agreement is the result of the judicial process against the union proposed in 2025 by the Herzog family. “This important historical advance happens within the 50th anniversary of this crime and the tireless struggle of Clarice Herzog for justice to Vlado,” celebrated the Vladimir Herzog Institute in a note.
The Herzog family repair pact was made less than five months after the beginning of the lawsuit and provides for the payment of compensation for moral damages in addition to the payment of retroactive amounts of economic reparation in monthly and continued provision that is currently paid to the journalist’s widow, Clarice Herzog. By the agreement, the total amount to be paid to the family is about R $ 3 million, in addition to maintaining the monthly installment.
Union attorney General Jorge Messias states that the agreement reveals AGU’s commitment to the repair of serious violations committed against citizens during the dictatorship and points out that repair to the Herzog family promotes “justice in relation to one of the most regrettable and barbaric episodes committed during the exception period in the country,” according to the government. According to Messiah, it is a show of the disposition of the current federal government to promote historical memory and truth.
“With this agreement, we demonstrate that we are able to import, to indignantly indignantly,” says Union Attorney General Clarice Calixto. “We therefore built a response to the height of the provocation of journalist Herzog, who said that when we lose the ability to indignate ourselves with the atrocities practiced against others, we can no longer consider ourselves civilized human beings,” he concludes.
The agreement will be sent by AGU to the Federal Court for approval. On June 26, the day before the date the journalist would turn 88, a symbolic act of celebration of the agreement at the Vladimir Herzog Institute (IVH) will be held.
