The president of, David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union), read on Tuesday (17) the request to create a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate the performance of militias and criminal factions.
Reading the application is another step towards opening a parliamentary investigation. The measure does not automatically guarantee the committee’s operation depending on the indication of the members by party leaders.
The request was submitted in February by Senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) with 31 signatures, four more than the 27 necessary. The senator says he is confident that the CPI will start working in the second half of this year.
“Criminal factions and militias expanded their performance without a coordinated and efficient response from the state. This commission will be an opportunity to deepen the investigations, expose the operation of these networks and propose legislative changes that run the financial flow of these organizations and strengthen public safety in Brazil,” Vieira said in a statement.
Also on Tuesday, Alcolumbre read the request for the creation of a CPMI, made up of federal deputies and senators, on the fraud at the INSS (National Institute of Social Security).
