The president defended on Tuesday (17), during intervention at the expanded session of the summit, the return of the protagonism of the United Nations () in the resolution of world conflicts. According to him, the leadership vacuum aggravates the current picture of wars between countries. “Three permanent members of the Security Council are sitting around this table and other nations with tradition in defense of peace. It is the time to return the protagonism to the UN. The G7 is made up of seven of the largest industrialized economies in the world: Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. From this group, the United States, the United Kingdom and France make up the UN Security Council.
Lula quoted Israel’s recent attacks on Iran which, according to him, “threatens to make the Middle East a single battlefield, with invaluable global consequences.” About the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, he said that none of the sides will be able to achieve his goals by the military. “Only the dialogue between the parties can lead to a ceasefire and pave the way to lasting peace,” he said.
The Brazilian president also commented on the conflict in, stating that nothing justifies the “indiscriminate killing of thousands of women and children and the use of hunger as a weapon of war”.
Energy security
In his speech at the G7 expanded session, Lula highlighted Brazil’s role for world energy security, but stressed that the country will not become the scene of predatory races and exclusionary practices. “Developing countries need to participate in all stages of global strategic mineral chains, including their processing,” he said.
He said that the expansion of wind and solar parks and the decarbonization of the transportation and agriculture sector depend on strategic minerals and recalled that Brazil has the largest world nihium reserve, the second nickel, graffiti and rare land and the third manganese and bauxite. “But we will not repeat the mistakes of the past. For centuries, mineral exploration has generated wealth for a few and has left traces of destruction and misery for many. It should not threaten biomes such as the Amazon and sea funds,” the president warned.
He cited the Brazilian role in the production of biofuels, the use of clean energy sources, the production of green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.
Canada Relations
In conversation with Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney, released on social networks, Lula congratulated him on the blunt defense of the country’s sovereignty and said he wants to strengthen bilateral relations.
“I want to strengthen Brazil’s relationship with Canada. It is a very important country, there are many Canadian companies in Brazil. I would like us to have a political, cultural and commercial relationship and also in the much stronger climate issue. This is my purpose,” said Lula.
Carneydo stressed that COP 30, which will be held in Belém (PA), will be the most important meeting of this year worldwide and made available to help with whatever it is necessary. “There is no one better to lead this effort than you,” said the prime minister.
