Rules should be in force since June 7, 2022
The European Commission will sue Portugal, Bulgaria and Ireland at the European Union (EU) Court for failing compliance with terrorism prevention rules on digital platforms.
In a statement, the community executive announced that he will sue Lisbon for failing to apply parts of the rules to combat activities considered terrorist on digital platforms and should be in force since June 7, 2022.
In particular, the three countries did not designate the national authorities responsible for the application of these rules and the notification to the commission of these same competent authorities.
The purpose of these rules, said the European Commission in the statement, is to “prevent the spread of extremist ideologies over the Internet – fundamental to prevent attacks and alleging radicalization – safeguarding the same fundamental rights.”
