Kaja Kallas argued that ‘maintaining the alliance unity is as priority as increasing the defense spending’ of the North Atlantic Treaty organization; of the 32 countries that are part of NATO, 23 are also in the EU

The head of European Union Diplomacy (EU), Kaja Kallas

The head of the diplomacy of , said on Wednesday (18) that Russia has “no chance” against NATO, but stressed that the military alliance should maintain its unit. “Keeping the alliance unit is as priority as increasing defense spending,” Kallas said about the NATO summit meeting scheduled for next week in The Hague. Of the 32 countries that are part of NATO, 23 are also in the European Union.

In Kallas’ view, Russia is already “a direct threat to the EU” and so it is essential to protect unity from the transatlantic military alliance. “Those who have a border with Russia often feel their provocations,” said Kallas, former minister of Estonia and born in this country when he was still part of the Soviet Union. “Those of us who lived Soviet imperialism feel even more,” he added.

She insisted that the threat Russia now represents is not limited to neighboring countries. “It’s a problem for all of us,” he said. At the Hague Summit (Netherlands) meeting, NATO countries will have a discussion of a significant increase in military spending. The United States Government presses to the level of spending to go from the current equivalent of 2% of each national GDP to 5%, a jump that currently seems out of the reach of most countries.
