Relatives of the journalist murdered during the military dictatorship in Brazil should receive $ 3 million for moral damages, as well as retroactive values regarding economic reparation
A reported on Wednesday (18) that will sign a court agreement to pay compensation to family members of the journalist murdered during the period of military dictatorship in the country. The symbolic act of the signing of the agreement will be held on the 26th, in São Paulo. The journalist’s family should receive R $ 3 million in moral damages and retroactive values of economic reparation. The agreement will be made in the context of the lawsuit in which the family sued the Union in search of reparation.
According to Union Attorney General Jorge Messias, the conclusion of the agreement demonstrates the agency’s commitment to the repair of human rights violations that occurred during the dictatorship. “Resolve conflicts in a consensual way and promote historical justice, besides being commandments of our constitution, are ethical commitments of AGU,” says Messias. Vladimir Herzog was director of journalism at TV Cultura in October 1975, when he was sought by military personnel and, one day later, spontaneously attended the headquarters of the Information Operations Detachment-Internal Defense Operations Center (DOI-CODI/SP), in Vila Mariana, São Paulo.
In Doi-Codi, he was tortured and murdered. The military created a false scene of suicide. At Seventh -day Mass, at the Cathedral of the Sé, a crowd with more than 8,000 people attended the ecumenical act. The episode was marked as a symbol of struggle against the military dictatorship and the return of democracy.
