Instead of lifting coins, you can raise boar teeth – they have commercial value in this Vanuatu community, which is anything but conventional.
If you want to raise money in Vanuatu, go to any ATM, except at Tangbuniaon Pentecost Island. Of course the experience can be fun – and you can even change what you will receive for money. But do not expect conventional coins of the local currency, the vatu.
This unusual bank is governed by the Turaga indigenous movement, and uses a Single writing system called Avoiulialso created by chief Viraleo Boborenvanua, leader of the movement. Avoiuli consists of a system developed over 14 years for the local language Raga and is based on traditional drawings made in the sand.
And the very currency used in the transactions of this bank is unique, and only used among the Turaga community – the Leveled (or “cash”).
Livatu is worth exactly the same as a boar tooth. That’s why if you have some per house, you can change them for money. But the Tangbuna Bank even uses the boar teeth as a currency. If you request a loan, for example, you already know how you will receive it.
And the bank even offers advantageous rates for the local community: according to, ensures a 15%generous interest rate. The bank’s idea was really to ensure that even the poorest inhabitants could build “savings accounts.”
And no, you don’t have to transport your teeth with you, physically – the bank issues check and allows transfers between accounts. But if you prefer to perform gender transactions, you can still choose not only for these bones of animals, but also for the most varied objects, such as tinged rugs and other traditional products.
