The US Department of Defense describes a five percent GDP goal for the new global standard for NATO and Asia.

On Thursday, the US Department of Defense described the request of President Donald Trump that the Allies in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) to earn five percent of their GDP for defense as a new “global standard”. According to the Pentagon, it is also supposed to apply to South Korea and other Washington partners in Asia, TASR reports.

A spokesman for the US ministry Sean Parnell said this in response to the question of the South Korean agency Jonhap. He followed the words of Defense Minister Peta Hegseth, who announced this week that a new standard of defense expenditure was created by the Allies.

Five percent as a goal

“As Minister Hegseth said … Our European allies are now reporting a global standard for our alliances, especially in Asia, and that is five percent of GDP in defense,” Parnell said.

He pointed out the significant military armor of China and the continuing development of the North Korea nuclear and missile program. “It is only logical that the Allies in the Asian-Pacific region will respond quickly and to deal with Europe at the pace and amount of defense spending.” Seoul currently spends approximately 2.5 percent of its GDP in defense.
