The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, (PSD), said on Wednesday (18.jun.2025) that, in some locations in the state, the situation caused by heavy rains is already critical, because it rained far beyond expected for the period. He, however, said there are no signs so far that something similar to last year’s floods will be repeated in the coming days.
“There are many punctual situations, criticism, that we are already facing, but so far, the information does not realize anything like what the state has experienced last year.”said milk in a shared video on social networks, comparing the current situation with the 2024 tragedy, when the consequences of the rains killed 184 people and left 25 missing.

The heavy rains that have reached part of Rio Grande do Sul since last weekend, left a missing person and caused damage and inconvenience in at least 68 of the 497 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul.
The governor said that in some locations from Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the northwest region, has rained the equivalent of 350 millimeters since last weekend. And that in some of these points, it should continue to rain strongly in the next few hours.
“Of course this brings a lot of inconvenience. But last year, on the floods of May, we had more than 1,000 millimeters, kind of widespread, from the state center to the northern region, in the headwaters of the rivers, generating that level of extreme situation we had ”he said.
According to him, after the 2024 tragedy, the gaucho state is better prepared to face heavy rains.
“We are stronger. We reinforce Civil Defense, Firefighters and Military Brigade teams with equipment and structure, which helps us give a better answer to a situation like this”he said.
Also according to the governor, the rivers of the Valleys of Taquari and Caí was expected to reach the flood quotas later this Friday (18.jun), as recorded in Taquari, late this morning, near Lajeado and Estrela.
“The Caí Valley must have elevations that should flood some locations today”he declared.
“We are stronger, prepared, with teams on the field, but it is inevitable that in a rainfall far above normal for the period, there are inconvenience. Many of them specially lived in the metropolitan region [de Porto Alegre].
