The Federal Supreme Court () will offer lifetime institutional security to its ministers. By current rules, the escort is maintained for a maximum of six years after the magistrates’ retirement. It was the minister, president of the Supreme Court, who took the proposal to his colleagues. He justified that the court members have been receiving “repeated serious threats” and mentioned the bomb attack to the court building in November 2024. The rules on the ministers of the ministers are foreseen in a normative instruction in force since 2014. Initially, the provision of personal security services was secured for 36 years from the date of retirement. In 2023, the Supreme Court allowed the deadline for another three years if the minister requested. The decision was made from a request from Minister Marco Aurélio Mello, retired in 2021.

At the time, Barroso argued that “public exposure and risks to which the Supreme Ministers are subject to considerably increased” and that, given the degree of visibility of the Court, the magistrates “remain exposed to dangers that result directly from the exercise of civil service” even after retirement.

In revisiting the rules, the Supreme Court president argued that there was a climb of attacks and threats directed to the members of the Court “the context that founded the court’s decision by expanding the time to provide security services has not been improved so far. On the contrary, Barroso wrote by suggesting lifetime security. The theme is in voting in an administrative session in the virtual plenary. Most are already formed with the votes of André Mendonça, Cristiano Zanin, Edson Fachin, Flávio Dino, Gilmar Mendes and Luiz Fux.
