UFAC teacher teaches on the ground for lack of laboratory and denounces abandonment, in the interior of Acre

Professor Karlla Godoy, PhD in Entomology and Professor of the Biological Sciences course at the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), taught a practical class on the Floresta campus floor in Cruzeiro do Sul, not having a suitable laboratory for discipline. The episode, registered in video and shared on social networks, generated wide repercussion among students and professionals in the field.

According to the teacher, 17 years ago she asked the rectory for an appropriate space to teach practical entomology classes, without ever being attended. “All the center and collegiate meetings I make this claim and never, at least, the dean called me to a conversation. For me, as a professional I am, I am ashamed of this situation. Entomology is abandoned. The resources for teaching, research and extension are bank with money from my pocket. Now, humiliating my students this way … I feel a trash, not a university doctor,” he said.

Karlla also states that, in view of the absence of institutional support, he has been bound alone with the costs of the materials used in the classroom, research activities and extension projects.

Given the repercussion of the case, the Federal University of Acre issued an official note clarifying the situation. According to the institution, the space originally intended for the entomology laboratory is currently used for the storage of scientific collections, and discipline classes are traditionally performed at the Zoology Laboratory.

UFAC also stated that the teacher was oriented to formalize a request detailing her needs, which, according to the note, was not made. Still, the course collegiate deliberated on the issue and registered the request in Minutes, with the objective of including it in the institutional planning for the construction of new laboratories in the campus. It is expected that the bidding for a new building, with a specific space for entomology, will occur later this year.

The university stressed that there are adequate and available environments on campus for practical classes and considered unnecessary to use makeshift spaces, such as the ground, where the class was taught. In the text, Ufac also regrets the way the case was released and defends institutional dialogue as the best way to resolve the challenges faced.

Clarification note

The Federal University of Acre (UFAC), through this note, clarifies information regarding the video that circulates on social networks involving an activity of the discipline of general entomology at Campus Floresta, in Cruzeiro do Sul.

The space originally intended for the entomology laboratory is, in fact, used for the storage and preservation of the scientific collections of the area, being classes traditionally taught in the Zoology Laboratory, a space used for years as a reference for the performance of the practical activities of the discipline.

The teacher responsible for the discipline, although oriented to formally request a new space, describing his pedagogical and structural needs, did not. Even so, the coordination of the course led the theme to the collegiate’s deliberation, which has already formalized the demand in minutes. The objective is to include the request in the institutional planning to build new laboratories in the campus, which is being evaluated within the Plan of Needs of the Southern Cruise Unit. It is expected that this year the construction of a new building with appropriate structure will be bid, including a specific space for entomology.

We stress that, despite current structural limitations, there are adequate and available places in the campus for the development of classes, which makes the use of improvised spaces unnecessary as suggested in the video. The university regrets the way the situation was publicly exposed, understanding that internal, institutional and purposeful dialogue is the best way to solve the challenges.

UFAC reaffirms its commitment to the quality of education, respect for the academic community and the constant search for improvements in its infrastructure.
