China reports that sustainable energy trade increased by 50%

China’s sustainable electricity volume exceeded 220 billion kilowatt-hour in the first 5 months of this year, marking an increase of almost 50% annually, according to sector data released in a forum on Wednesday (18.jun.2025).

According to China’s electricity board statistics, with the country’s capacity and energy production constantly increasing, the supply of new sources is now playing an increasingly active and competitive role in the electricity market.

In 2024, the volume of negotiation based on the national electricity market of new energy exceeded 1 trillion kilowatt-hour, accounting for 55% of the total production of new energy, according to the board.

China’s market-oriented electricity volume increased from 1.1 trillion kilowatt hours in 2016 to 6.2 trillion by 2024, with its participation in total electricity consumption rising from 17% to 63%, marking a significant change in the allocation of electrical resources towards a market oriented system.

Yang Kun, executive vice president of the China Electricity Council, said that in recent years the growing demand for green consumption in China has boosted the rapid expansion of green electricity trade, highlighting the environmental value of sustainable energy.
