It knocked him down last Tuesday (17) a veto of President Lula who, according to the articulators of the measure, made it difficult to research new drugs for use in humans.
The overthrow was attended by the leader of PP at, Dr Luizinho (RJ), who negotiated the endorsement of Health Minister Alexandre Padilha.
The veto had been applied by the government on a project by former senator Ana Amelia (PSDB-RS) approved in 2024, which said in one of her articles that pharmaceutical companies could stop the free supply of experimental drugs to those who participated in surveys five years after being launched.
The justification of the government is that this temporal limit would harm citizens. “It is currently assured to all participants, at the end of the study, by the sponsor, free and indefinite access to prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic methods that have been effective,” said the veto.
For defenders of the overthrow of veto, establishing a period of five years is important to maintain economic viability and attractiveness for companies and researchers.
“Today many of our researchers leave Brazil because they have no environment here, many prefer to go to Argentina,” says Luizinho.
For industry, the overthrow of veto establishes a balance to attract investments for research and the development of innovative drugs in the country.
