A missing goal by Lionel Messi defined Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over Porto on Thursday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The US team surprised the Portuguese and put themselves in the fight for the classification of the round of 16 of the Club World Cup.

After two rounds, Group A is led by Palmeiras, which has four points and takes advantage over Inter Miami only in the goal balance. Porto has a point, as is Al Ahly. The two vacancies of the key in the knockout will be defined next Monday (23), with two simultaneous games, at 22h (Brasilia): Inter Miami x Palmeiras and Porto x Al Ahly.

In front of Porto, Inter showed what had not shown in the debut. The team started the match in the attack and created chances before being punished, in a penalty marked with the help of the video referee. Striker Samu Aghehowa killed eight minutes into the first half and left the Portuguese formation.

The US club reacted after the break and sought the draw after two minutes of the final stage, in Marcelo Weigandt’s play completed by Télasco Segovia. Shortly thereafter, Messi tried a table and was missed in half moon. The 37 -year -old Argentine star hit the left corner on top nine minutes and defined the scoring.
