Callas stressed that recent EU security and defense decisions have unlocked significant funding, with over 800 billion euros available for joint supplies and defense projects. He made a special reference to the SAFE loan mechanism, which, as he underlined, is not protective and can also be used by partners such as Turkey. “Turkey, as a candidate country, now has access to Safe loans for joint projects with European countries,” he said, adding that these tools are aimed at boosting the European Defense Industry and Transnational Cooperation.
Turkey as a mediator in the Middle East
The EU recognizes Turkey’s role as a mediator on critical regional issues, including negotiations on Ukraine and talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Callas expressed concern about escalating tensions in the Middle East, with particular emphasis on attacks on nuclear facilities and the risk of wider conflict. “The war in the Middle East is extremely worrying.
