South Africa reduces embargoes to Brazil’s chicken after the end of avian flu

A South Africa announced the reduction of embargoes to Brazilian chicken After Brazil was officially declared free of Avian flu last Wednesday (19). The information was confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The country joins Mexico and Russia, which had already adopted restriction regionalization measures, limiting suspensions only to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where the only focus of the disease was recorded in a commercial farm.

During the 28 -day period of sanitary emptiness, no new case has been registered in Brazilian commercial farms, which, according to the World Animal Health Organization (OMSA) protocols, allows the country to resume the status of free from the disease. Only cases were recorded in wild and subsistence birds in the period.

Formal notification was sent to OMSA. Brazil also reported all countries that imposed restrictions on the importation of Brazilian chicken meat, requesting the revocation of suspensions based on the new sanitary status.

More than 40 markets have announced some kind of restriction on Brazilian birds since the confirmation of focus in Rio Grande do Sul. Although the sanitary void ended only on Wednesday, the government had been negotiating with business partners from the first day after the occurrence.

In the case of Mexico and Russia, the regionalization had been announced even before Brazil declared itself free from avian flu.

Restrictions on Brazilian chicken

Despite the restriction by these countries and the direct impact on the producers’ pockets, the map was not caught by surprise by avian flu.

The evaluation within the government is that, despite the confirmation of the presence of the virus in a commercial creation, the ministry was already prepared for the situation.

Avian flu virus is not new: it had already been detected in other regions of the world, such as Asia, Africa and Northern Europe. In Brazil itself, it had already been identified in wild and subsistence birds. In the old continent, only in 2025, more than 200 cases were recorded.

The perception on the map was that it would only be a matter of time until avian flu also reached a Brazilian commercial creation.

The Ministry was already preparing precautionary measures. Since 2023, the government has given special attention to the subject.

Regionalization agreements were signed with countries such as Japan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Philippines – important markets for the industry’s trade balance.

The agreement with Japan, for example, was signed in March.
