The United Nations (UN) on Thursday pointed out that violence against children in conflict zones reached a “unprecedented level” in 2024. At the same time, she also included a coalition of gangs in Haiti on the list of serious infringers of children’s rights. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
“In 2024, the violence against children in armed conflicts reached an unprecedented level, with The number of serious violations of their rights increased by 25 percent compared to 2023”States in the annual report of the Secretary General of the organization Antónia Guterres. The largest number of serious violations of children were recorded by VV Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Haiti.
She included a coalition of the Haitian gangs known as VIV Ansanm (coexistence) on the list of serious violators of the UN Children’s Rights. The organization stated that the members of the gangs of local children had been recruited, used, killed by mutilated and committed sexual violence.
In total, the UN identified 2269 cases of serious violations of the rights of 1373 children in Haiti last year. In 213 cases, they were killed, in 302 they were recruited into gangs and recorded 566 cases of sexual violence.
“I am extremely concerned about the increase in serious violations of children’s rights, especially the number of cases of their recruitment and use, sexual violence, kidnapping and denial of access to humanitarian aid by armed gangs,” he reported in the Guterres report.
AFP recalls that gangs operate freely in several areas in Haiti and control most of the capital Port-Au-Prince. The country has been in chaos for several years. It has no president, parliament, or proper prime minister, and is ruled by a transitional council, which should prepare parliamentary elections.
