Who is Gavin Newsom, the governor who leads the resistance of the Democrats to Trump

With the second term of governor of California ending in 2026, with no possibility of a third party, Newsom appears again as one of the party’s most prominent figures, assuming the vigorous opposition to Donald Trump’s policies

In a week of protests against immigration Rusgs in Los Angeles, California Gavin Newsom governor emerged as leader of the Democratic resistance to President Donald Trump, challenging him in front of the chambers and in courts.

It is a resurgence of Gavin Newsom’s presidential profile, which had already been seen as Joe Biden’s potential successor if the former president had not decided to re-appay.

With the second term of governor of California ending in 2026, with no possibility of a third party, Newsom appears again as one of the party’s most prominent figures, assuming the vigorous opposition to Donald Trump’s policies.

This was a position that had weakened in recent times. In January, the governor received Trump in California and got an agreement to mitigate the devastating effects of fireworks in Los Angeles. In March, he lifted the left on the left when he launched the “This Is Gavin Newsom” podcast and invited a series of conservative personalities to talk.

The list included Charlie Kirk, co-founder of the Ultra-conservative organization Turning Point USA, Steve Bannon, former Trump-Stratega, and host Dr. Phil, who has been invited by the ICE agency to support illegal immigrants.

In addition to controversial statements, such as considering the participation of transsexuals in female sports, Newsom also proposed to suspend the benefits in the medical health system to undocumented immigrants, which was understood as a movement to the center, which enhanced the Progressive Wing of Democrats.

However, Gavin Newsom’s muscular response to Donald Trump’s actions in Los Angeles – where the president mobilized 4,000 members of the National Guard and 700 Marines – repositioned the Democrat.

Newsom sued Trump for the mobilization of military against his will and opposes immigration Rusgas, who intend to stop thousands of people a day and then deport them.

In a statement to the country, where he characterized the president as authoritarian, Newson accused Trump of abuse of power and warned that democracy is under robbery.

It also promised that California will continue to fight for its people and against the sagging of state powers by the federal government.

This is an important clash for the 57 -year -old Democrat, who began his political career in 1996, when he was appointed by the then Mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown, for the city’s traffic committee.

Hence he was elected to the Supervisor Council in 1998, and in 2003 ran for Mayor’s post of his native city, winning the race and serving in the position until 2011.

He was considered moderate in economic and tax terms but challenged the ‘status quo’ when he authorized San Francisco to issue same -sex marriage licenses, long before their legalization in California and in the country.

Degree in Political Science from the University of Santa Clara, where he had received a partial scholarship, Newsom was an entrepreneur before he launched himself in politics: he founded a wine cellar that became Plumpjack Group, a diverse chain of wine and hotel business.

The political aspirations spoke, however, louder and, after leaving Mayor de San Francisco, headed the Sacramento as Deputy Governor of California. That’s when he learned to move in the corridors of power, managing to be elected governor of the most populous state in the country in 2018, with 62% of the votes.

The most difficult moment of the mandate was Covid-19 pandemic management, with many protests related to confinement and its economic consequences. In 2021, he faced and defeated an attempt at dismissal, which failed because he maintained high levels of popularity, and was reelected governor in 2022.

Married to Jennifer Siebel since 2008, Gavin Christopher Newsom has four children and suffers from dyslexia, which made studies difficult for children.

Before the current woman, she was married to lawyer Kimberly Guilfoyle, who later became a Fox News personality, a bride of Donald Trump Jr. and current US ambassador in Greece by Donald Trump’s appointment.

When he launched his podcast, rumors were rumored that he would be advised with Guildoyle about Maga (Make America Great Again) personalities of the Republican party, which could give voice.
