The earthquake epicenter was located approximately 150 kilometers from Tehran. The damage should have been minimal.
The magnitude of 5.1 degrees of Richter scale hit the north of Iran on Friday, reports the US Geology Institute (USGS). The country has been plaguing the country for more than a week by air attacks Israel, TASR writes according to AFP and DPA reports.
According to the Iranian news agency Tasim, the earthquake could have a force of up to 5.5 degrees of the Richter scale and took place at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers below the surface. The earthquake epicenter was located near Sorche about 37 kilometers southwest of Semnán and 150 kilometers from Tehran.
Immediately after the earthquake, no deaths were reported and “only minimal” property damage. However, the earthquake affected the country in the midst of an armed conflict with Israel and almost a complete failure of the Internet ordered by the authorities.
In the area of northern Iran, strong shocks are relatively common, as the Arab, Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet below. More than 1,500 people died in an earthquake in neighboring Afghanistan in 2023.
