The Iranian-Israeli conflict could cause a new refugee crisis. The UN calls for the de -escalation and protection of the population.
Filippo Grandi, a UN High Commissioner, said on Saturday that the Iranian-Israeli conflict must not cause another refugee crisis in the Middle East. He pointed out that if people run away from the country, there is no fast way back. Intense attacks in recent days have triggered population movements in both states. TASR informs this based on the AFP report.
“This region has already survived more than enough wars, victims and displacements of the population. We cannot allow another refugee crisis to be spread here,” Grandi said. “It is high time to de -escalation. When people are forced to escape, there is no fast way back and too often the consequences persist for generations,” he pointed out.
AFP recalls that Iran is a country with the largest number of refugees in the world and are up to 3.5 million, most of the neighboring Afghanistan. “If the conflict with Israel persists, this will mean further uncertainty and difficulties for refugees,” says the Grandi Office. Both sides of the conflict called for de -escalation and respect for the rights of people trying to get to safety.
