The tension between Israel and Iran continues to climb, and diplomacy seems not to be the way for immediate conflict resolution, according to Professor Lucas de Souza Martins of the University of Temple. In an interview with CNNthe expert analyzed the current situation and the prospects for the future of relations between the two countries.

According to Martins, the firm position on both sides makes a diplomatic solution in the short term unlikely. “What seems to be that diplomacy will not be the way to enable at least immediate peace between Israel and Iran,” said the professor.

Irreducible positions

The expert pointed out that Israel is determined to prevent the advance of the Iranian nuclear program, while Iran is fragile geopolitically and the recent attacks suffered. This combination of factors makes any immediate diplomatic agreement difficult.

Martins also commented on the role of the United States in the conflict. According to him, the close alliance between the US and Israel is an important factor, but not enough to solve the situation only with a presidential phone call, as suggested by Iranian authorities.

Impacts on American Policy

The teacher also analyzed the implications of the conflict on the internal policy of the United States, especially in the context of the approaching middle -term elections. He stressed that a possible US intervention in the conflict could contradict Donald Trump’s campaign promises to reduce the country’s involvement in foreign wars.

“There is a whole logistical question of building a government narrative that needs to present itself as a government that spends little or if you really have to invest in this conflict will have to build a new narrative, a national unification narrative against the common enemy,” explained Martins.

The expert concluded that it will be crucial to accompany the construction of these narratives by all political ideologies in the United States as the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to develop.
