Niteroi publicist Juliana Marins, 26, who fell during a guided trail on Mount Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, was reached by mountaineers on Saturday morning. According to family members, the team managed to reach Juliana before 12 noon (Brasília time), offering food and water.

The Brazilian embassy in Indonesia reported that the rescue, however, had to be postponed due to bad weather, low visibility and extremely steep ground. The statement was passed on to the Niteroiense family. Juliana may be injured and remains on a slope of Mount Rinjani, on Lombok Island, after falling during a trail on Friday.

“Until 5:30 pm local time (6:30 am on Sunday in Brasília), the joint search and rescue team reached the point where the victim’s backpack was found, but has not yet been able to reach it due to climatic conditions, low visibility and steep ground. The operations will resume in the morning,” said the Brazilian embassy, according to family members.

The accident occurred around 7 pm on Friday (Brasília time), and since then Juliana has awaited help. It has fallen about 300 meters downhill and, according to the family, is conscious, but exposed to the risk of a new fall, “on the edge of a cliff.”

A video captured by drone and sent to the family by people on the trail shows Juliana moving, even with possible abrasions. The images, obtained by the globe, confirm their state of consciousness.

“After falling she still slid about 300 meters down below. It is possible that she does not survive because of the delay in the rescue and fall,” says sister, Mariana Marins.

The first rescue attempt took place at dawn on Saturday, but rescuers failed to overtake the critical access area. A new team of specialized mountairers was mobilized and advanced to where the girl’s backpack was found. The forecast now is that the rescue be resumed to dawn on Sunday in Indonesia (Saturday night in Brazil).

Juliana has been in a backpack through Southeast Asia since February, and has visited countries such as Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In Indonesia, she participated in a guided trail when she suffered the fall.

The family was only informed about three hours after the accident, through Spanish tourists who were at the scene. They located the young woman’s profile on social networks and contacted acquaintances in Brazil, who managed to trigger relatives and authorities.
