Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) plans, the son “02” of former President Jair Bolsonaro, to apply for the Senate by Santa Catarina were not well accepted by state industry bodies. In a statement, the Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina (Fiesc) said that it does not need to “import” politicians from other states and that the Senate candidate must be linked to Santa Catarina interests.

“Santa Catarina has prepared and legitimate political leaders to represent it in the National Congress. The Santa Catarina industry argues that the voice of the state in Brasilia must be constituted based on merit, dialogue with society and profound connection with Santa Catarina-and not by external impositions,” said Fiesc in a statement.

The federation also stated that, to maintain industrial interest in the state, which has one of the largest poles in the sector in Brazil, the names for a possible vacancy in the Senate must have “roots in the state”.

SC does not need to “import” politicians, says Fiesc about the candidacy of Carlos Bolsonaro

“Our congressmen must be linked to the productive sector and the population of Santa Catarina, to defend with legitimacy and knowledge of our interests,” the federation said. “Fiesc values the political autonomy of the state, local leaders and respect for the trajectory of a state that has never bowed to projects alien to its reality.”

Carlos Bolsonaro’s idea was to take advantage of the electoral recall in Santa Catarina, where his father obtained 69.27% of the valid votes in the second round in the 2022 elections, against 30.73% of Lula. Most voted councilman in the state capital in the municipal election of 2024, with 130,480 votes, Carlos will not have room for the dispute of the two vacancies to the Senate in Rio.

Three PL names seek party nomination for both vacancies in the Senate race. While Flávio Bolsonaro is expected to be a candidate for reelection, Governor Claudio Castro and Senator Carlos Portinho are expected to compete for the party’s place in the elections.

Carlos will not be the first member of the Bolsonaro family to join Santa Catarina politics. The younger brother, Jair Renan Bolsonaro, was the most voted elected councilman in Balneário Camboriú, on the coast of Santa Catarina. He applied for office using the name of a “Jair Bolsonaro” urn.
