On the first summer day in Portugal, this Saturday, the sun was born at 06:10 and sets at 9:06 pm, with the day lasting 14:55:47.
The solstice took place at dawn, marking early summer to the northern hemisphere and the beginning of winter to the southern hemisphere.
The summer solstice marks the moment when one of the hemispheres on planet Earth is as close as possible in the sun, the other hemisphere as far as possible.
Below the Ecuador line, the summer solstice will take place on December 21, 2025, winter solstice day in the northern hemisphere.
The days will start to shrink
This is the longest day of the year and with the shortest night for the northern hemisphere, checking the reverse in the south.
On the first summer day in Portugal the sun was born at 6:10 am and puts it at 9:06 pm, with the day lasting 14:55:47. On Sunday the day apparently has the same duration but it will be two seconds shorter, and by the end of the month the day will be five minutes shorter.
It will be like this until the fall of autumn, on September 22 at 19:19, when the days will be the size of the nights, starting the night prevailing from there and even the winter solstice, which arrives at 15:02 of December 21 and that marks the longest night.
Hundreds celebrate the Solstice in Stonehenge
Fulfilling tradition, hundreds of people joined the sunrise in Stonehenge, England, to celebrate the summer solstice.
Druid music and rituals animated the millennial monument, considered UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
About one million tourists visit Stonehenge annually, but only in summer and winter solstices is allowed to access the ring formed by the stones of the archaeological ensemble.
Summer heat soon
The summer of 2025 comes with tall clouds to lower temperatures, especially on the coast, but promise to exceed 40 degrees soon in some places on the continent.
According to predictions of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and atmosphere (IPMA), the maximum temperatures should oscillate on the first summer day between 21ºC (degrees Celsius) of Ponta Delgada and the 34 of Beja. Districts of the coast, such as Viana do Castelo, Porto or Aveiro, should not go beyond 22 or 23ºC maximum temperature.
The situation will however change over next week, especially on Friday and Saturday, indicate IPMA forecasts. Viana do Castelo and Porto should arrive almost 30 and beja at 41ºC.
