Flamengo will only fulfill table in the last round of Group D of the Club World Cup. Friday’s results (20) guaranteed the red-black club the first place of the key, regardless of the results next Tuesday (24).
Following Flamengo’s 3-1 win over Chelsea, Tunisia’s Sperance made 1-0 at the United States Los Angeles FC. Thus, Flamengo was first, with six points, followed by Chelsea (3), Sperance (3) and Los Angeles (0).
Chelsea and Sperance will face each other in the last round. Only one of them can reach Flamengo’s score, but, as direct confrontation is the first tiebreaker criterion, there is no longer the possibility of the Brazilian team losing first place.
The Los Angeles FC x Flamengo, on Tuesday, in Orlando, will be basically a friendly. And the Sperance x Chelsea, also on Tuesday, in Philadelphia, will be worth the second place and the last vacancy of Group D in the round of 16. Chelsea, with best goal balance, will play for a draw.
Guaranteed in the knockout, Flamengo now awaits the definition of Group C to meet their opponent in the next phase. The rival will be second placed from the key with Bayern, Benfica, Boca Juniors and the eliminated Auckland City.
