Operation was used for vessels, lifeguards and helicopters; eight of the rescued needed medical care
A strong wind dragged more than one hundred practitioners on Saturday morning (21) at Leme Beach, in the South Zone. The Fire Department rescued 73 people using vessels, lifeguards and helicopters. The others managed to return to the waterfront on their own. According to firefighters, eight of the rescued needed medical attention. No information was disclosed about their health until the last update of this report.
“The victims were about 3 km from the coast,” said Major Fábio Contreiras, spokesman for the corporation. He warned of the importance of consulting weather conditions before playing water sports. “If there is a risk of strong wind, rain or agitated sea, don’t go,” he said.
The stand up paddle is practiced standing on a board using a rowing. The presence of sports adherents on the beaches of Leme and Copacabana is common in the early hours of the morning. This Saturday, the strength of the wind prevented many from returning to the beach. A similar episode occurred in August last year, when more than 100 practitioners also needed rescue after being surprised by the winds in Copacabana.
