Recycling of old materials is still on the course and wooden pallets turn into a real treasure in the hands of creative. From one old piece you can create a flower pot in one afternoon, which not only looks good but also really works.
Wooden pallets are literally building materials for handymen today. With the right instruments and a little imagination, you will conjure up practical flower pots that fit into a balcony, terrace or garden. The advantage is not only the low price, but also the fact that you adapt the finished box exactly to your needs. Moreover, it’s a great way to recycle, save and feel good about your own work. In this article, step by step we will make a deep flowerpot from one common palette. And all without the need for complex cutting or special tools.
YouTube video about how to make a flower pot from pallets on The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni:
How to do it: a palette flower pot step by step
First, make sure that the palette you use is not chemically treated. Look for HT (Heat-Treated), which indicates safe heat treatment. Avoid MB pallets, which have been treated with methylbromide and are not suitable for food cultivation. Furthermore, prepare a crowbar, saw, brunette, screws and ideally working glasses and gloves. However, there is no need to be a trained carpenter, working with the palette is simple and can handle it even a beginner.
First place the palette on a flat surface and cut it into three approximately the same parts. This gives you the front, back and bottom of the pot. You can use the remaining wood on the sidewalls. Remove unnecessary partitions and nails on the back. The assembly of the construction itself is surprisingly easy. Connect the three main parts into the box shape and attach shorter side parts from the disassembled boards. If you want to lift the flower pot over the ground, for example because of slugs or drainage, use wooden blocks from the pallet like a leg.
You can leave the flower pot in a rustic style or grind it and paint it with a protective coating. Before planting, we recommend unloading the interior with a non -woven fabric or recycled bag, preventing the soil from leaching and extending the life of the wood. Then just fill with a substrate, ideally a mixture of compost, peat and perlite or vermiculite. The pot is deep enough for tomatoes, salads, herbs, but also smaller shrubs. And if you choose more pots next to each other, you can create a small home garden even on the balcony.
Ecology, saving and joy of creation
The self -made flower pot from the pallet is not only an ecological choice, but also a cheap alternative to expensive garden containers. In addition, you recycle material that would otherwise end up as waste. If you add the joy of creating and the opportunity to grow your own vegetables, fruits or flowers, you get a project that makes sense in all respects.
Because the pallets are diverse, no flower pot will be exactly the same. And that’s the magic! With a little imagination, you can decorate them with colors, labels, or turn them into thematic boxes, such as herbs, strawberries or decorative flowers. From one unused piece of wood you can have a beautiful and functional accessory for your garden and balcony. So if you are attracted to creations, you love the garden and want to save, the pallets flower pot is exactly the right project for you.
