Pre-candidates for the presidency of the right try to cling to the dispute with the support of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). To attract the Bolsonarist base, they bet on a common promise: a pardon to the former executive chief.
The governors of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), and Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), have already publicly committed to the measure, while waiting for a Bolsonaro signaling about who should support in next year’s elections.
First to speak out for the amnesty to the former president, Caiado defends the agenda since February 2024. In an interview with the newspaper Economic value On the eve of demonstrations called by Bolsonaro in Sao Paulo, the governor of Goiás stated that: “We need to calm the country and fight for a political climate of peaceful coexistence.”
In May this year, Caiado again publicly defended the pardon to the former president. During interview with GloboNewsthe governor defended forgiveness to Bolsonaro and the convicts in the Supreme Court for undemocratic acts that culminated in the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia.
“Ronaldo Caiado, President of the Republic: I am amicing and starting a new story in Brazil,” said the governor, before reiterating: “Caiado goes, reaching the presidency of the Republic and, at my moment, I will solve this, amnesty this whole situation. And we will discuss the problem of growth and pacification of the country.”
Support to a former president’s pardon is treated as one of the requirements for the Bolsonaro family to publicly support one of the names on the right to Planalto next year. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) said in an interview with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulothat the Bolsonarism candidate will have to be someone “who has the commitment” to the agenda.

“It will have to be someone in the presidency who has the commitment, I do not know how, that this (the pardon) is fulfilled,” said the senator.
One of the most listed names to receive the support of the former president is the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), former minister of Bolsonaro. The former chief of the executive signaled that he is willing to support him as presidential candidate in the 2026 election on a plate that would have former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL).
As showed the Estadãothe information circulates between members of the first school of the São Paulo government and right-wing parliamentarians. At least two Tarcisio interlocutors confirmed the information.

GENIAL RESEARCH/QUEST PUBLISHED Last week points out that Tarcísio and Michelle tied within the margin of error with Lula in an eventual second round of the presidential election. The current president takes ten percentage points against licensed deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP).
In March this year, Tarcisio questioned why Brazilian justice made the former president ineligible: “What reason to ward off Jair Messias Bolsonaro from the ballot box? Is it fear of losing election, because do you know they will lose?”.
Tarcísio also spoke of the amnesty of arrested and convicted of January 8: “We are here to ask, fight and show that we are all together to demand amnesty of those innocents who received disordered penalties (…) I want to see who will have the courage to oppose (the amnesty project),” said the chief executive branch.

Governor of Minas seeks support
The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, said earlier this month that he intends to apply for the presidency as one of the right postulants. Asked whether to maintain the intention even after the genius/Quaest research put it as the last name of the right -wing right, Zema disconcerted and said he was pleased with the scenario because he shows that the right, by the number of candidates he has, is better prepared to take the left of the country’s command.
Asked if he intends to leave a presidential candidate even without the support of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Zema said what he wants is to help Brazil and will participate in anything to see the PT outside the government.
One of the first steps to raise the former president’s support was the public promise that if elected intends to grant pardon to former President Bolsonaro. “I am totally favorable, totally favorable. We have already given pardon in the past and amnesty to those who murdered, kidnapped,” he said, adding that he sees how very wrong condemning someone who spotted a statue lipstick.
