Even after the largest US military operation against Iran in two decades, domestic support for President Donald Trump’s decision is still limited. According to a survey released on June 18 by the newspaper The Washington PostOnly 25% of Americans were favorable to potential air attacks, while 45% declared themselves opposed and 30% were undecided.

Among the Republican voters, 47% supported bombing, 24% were against and 29% were undecided. Already among the Democrats, 67% rejected the military offensive, while only 9% supported it. Among the independents, 44% were contrary to the attacks, 20% in favor and 36% had no opinion formed.
The division also appears among Americans living in home with military ties: 39% positioned themselves against attacks, 37% in favor and 24% said they were undecided.
Perception of the Iranian threat divides opinions
The survey also investigated the population’s perception of the Iran’s nuclear program. Only 22% considered the project an “immediate and severe threat”, while the majority (48%) classified it as a relatively serious threat. Another 23% saw him as a lower threat, and 7% said they did not consider it a threat.

These perceptions indicate that while Iran is seen as a potential risk on the part of the American population, support for preventive military actions is limited and conditioned to political and ideological factors.
