In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that armed actions represent ‘flagrant transgression of the United Nations Charter and Standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency’
The Brazilian government sees the military escalation in the Middle East with serious concern and condemns “vehement” and, more recently, against nuclear facilities, “in violation of the sovereignty of Iran and international law,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon (22). “Any attack armed with nuclear facilities represents flagrant transgression of the United Nations Charter and Standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Armed actions against nuclear facilities represent a serious threat to the life and health of civilian populations, exposing them to the risk of radioactive contamination and large-scale environmental disasters,” says Itamaraty statement.
According to the note, the Brazilian government reiterates its historical position in favor of the exclusive use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and rejects “firmly” any form of nuclear proliferation, especially in regions marked by geopolitical instability, such as the Middle East. THE It adds that Brazil also repudiates reciprocal attacks against densely populated areas, which have caused increasing number of victims and damage to civil infrastructure, including hospital facilities, which are specially protected by international humanitarian law.
“In reiterating its exhortation to the exercise of maximum containment by all parties involved in the conflict, Brazil emphasizes the urgent need for diplomatic solution that interrupts this cycle of violence and opens an opportunity for peace negotiations. The negative consequences of current military escalation can generate irreversible damage to peace and stability in the region and worldwide and nuclear proliferation regime.”
Conflict
Accusing Iran of being close to developing a nuclear weapon, Israel launched a surprise attack on the country on the 13th, expanding the war in the Middle East. This Saturday (21), the United States attacked three Iranian nuclear power plants: Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan. Iran states that its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes and was in the midst of a negotiation with the United States to establish agreements that would ensure compliance with the non -proliferation of nuclear weapons, of which it is a signatory.
However, the IAEA has been accusing Iran of not fulfilling all its obligations, although it recognizes that it has no proof that the country would be building an atomic bomb. Iran accuses the agency of acting “politically motivated” and directed by Western powers such as the US, France and Britain, who have supported Israel in the war against Tehran.
In March, the United States intelligence sector said Iran was not building nuclear weapons, information that is now questioned by President Donald Trump himself. Although Israel does not accept that Tehran has nuclear weapons, several sources throughout history have indicated that the country has maintained a large secret nuclear program since the 1950s. Such a project would have developed at least 90 atomic warheads.
