With the theme “Aging LGBT+: Memory, Resistance and Future”, the 29th edition of São Paulo highlighted this Sunday (22) the importance of visibility and rights of the LGBTQIA+ Elderly population. Paulista Avenue, the traditional starting point of the event, was occupied by thousands of people, with electric trios, blocks and artistic and political manifestations in defense of diversity. It was the first time the stop, considered one of the largest in the world, directly addressed the issue of aging LGBTQia+community.
The theme has boosted a series of discourses that reinforced the need for specific public policies for this population, as well as actions to combat ethaismo and social invisibility. Electric trios with people over 60 highlighted reinforced the message of the edition, which sought to connect different generations of the community. Throughout the programming, groups of families with trans children and adolescents, artists, militants and supporters also participated in the parade.
In addition to the cultural and political manifestation, the event had a special safety and health scheme. In all, 1,500 public agents were mobilized and there was reinforcement in transport and medical care. Authorities also issued personal safety guidelines, such as attention to value objects and use of mobile phone lock applications in case of theft.
The number of participants generated divergence: while the organization estimated up to 4 million people along the way, the count conducted by researchers from CEBRAP (Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning) using aerial images and artificial intelligence pointed out about 48,700 people on the peak concentration.
The stop was also marked by demonstrations in support of Latin American integration and resistance to political setbacks. Participants from other countries, such as Argentina, were present, reinforcing the idea of regional solidarity and continuity of the struggle for rights.
