The Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games cost nearly six billion euros ($ 6.9 billion dollars; $ 37.7 billion) of public spending, France’s Court of Auditors announced on Monday (23).
The court evaluated “organization spending at 2.77 billion euros (R $ 17.5 billion)”, including 1.4 billion euros (R $ 8.8 billion), and “infrastructure -related spending at 3.19 billion euros (R $ 20.2 billion)”.
“This first estimate acquires a growing interest in the context of the preparation of the 2030 Winter Olympics”, which will take place in the French Alps, commented the institution.
The Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (Cojo) had valued its spending at 4.4 billion euros (R $ 27.8 billion), which depended almost exclusively on private funding and the company Solide, which includes a public participation.
The estimate was released in a pressure context in France by its high levels of public debt (113% of GDP in 2024) and public deficit (5.8% in 2024), above the limits established by European rules.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s government defends a 40 billion euro savings in 2026 budgets to reduce the public deficit.
