The State Forests and experts have been beating the alarm for summer to collect only the mushrooms we are sure of. Nevertheless, the trend, which has been going on for some time, meant that many people leave the forest with inedible and even poisonous specimens, which can cause respected health consequences.
Drying toadstools in the sun for several months, makes it cease to be poisonous – this type of advice for several years, they circulate on the web and encourage to eat toadstools. But There are no reliable research confirming this thesis. Properties are seen in folk medicine, but currently not carried out enough analyzes of these fungi to be used safely, especially in this way.
Many doctors including Ewa Stawiarska spoke in this matter, indicating possible symptoms of poisoning after consuming this fungus. The most common symptoms include:
- auditory and visual perception disorders,
- movement disorders,
- tiredness,
- dizziness,
- psychomotor stimulation,
- feeling anxiety or euphoria,
- visual and auditory hallucinations.
In the red toadstool we will find substances such as ibotenic acid (panetrin, agarin), muscymol, muscard and muscardine. As the Poviat Sanitary and Epidemiological Station reminds, even after cooking a toadstool several times (such advice also appears on the Internet) does not deprive him of harmful substances toxic and hallucinogenic.

Mycologist, dr hab. Marta Wrzosek in an interview with PAP. She noted that Red floppy poisoning is probably small, but the toxins contained in it can irreversibly damage the brain. As emphasized, the symptoms may also vary depending on the position where the mushroom grew – it is impossible to determine whether the occasion contains more compounds on which the collectors (muscymol) or ibotenic acid depends, which can cause many undesirable reactions of the body.
Scientists point out to wait for the results of research on the substance (which are already ongoing) and not succumb to the current fashion – consuming and preparing red toadstools on their own can have very negative effects.
