Did you get unemployed? See the supports that few know (and it's not just unemployment allowance)

The law provides for specific support to ensure some income for people who are in unemployment until a new opportunity arises. According to Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), there are different installments and subsidies to which it can be used, depending on the individual situation and the contributory history.

When you lose your job involuntarily, the first step is to verify if there is the right to unemployment allowance. This support is intended for workers due to others with registration of discounts for social security. According to the source above, to have access it is necessary to have worked at least 360 days in the 24 months before unemployment, a requirement provided for in article 14 of Decree-Law No. 220/2006. The request must be submitted within a maximum of 90 days from the date on which the unemployment occurred, pursuant to article 19.

The assignment is not automatic. The request must be submitted to a employment center, and it is mandatory to be registered as unemployed and accept job offers or training, as required by article 17 of the same diploma.

Who can request the unemployment allowance

In addition to contract workers, certain independent workers may have access, when covered by mandatory protection regime in unemployment (Article 27-A of Decree-Law No. 220/2006 and Decree-Law 65/2012), namely corporate managers or entrepreneurs in an individual name, provided that they also have 360 days of contributions in the previous 24 months.

The CGD states that if the worker does not gather the conditions for unemployment allowance, it may be eligible for the unemployment social allowance, provided that the average monthly income per person of the household does not exceed 80% of IAS (article 42). This social allowance may be initial (article 40) when there was no sufficient or subsequent discount time (article 41) whether the period of unemployment subsidy end without new placement.

Duration and values of support

The period of assignment of unemployment allowance varies with age and discount time, as determined by article 24 of Decree-Law No. 220/2006. For beneficiaries under 30, the maximum is 330 days; Between 30 and 39 years can go to 420 days; Between 40 and 49 years old and for those who are 50 or older, the limit is 540 days.

The amount, as a rule, corresponds to 65% of the daily reference remuneration, calculated by the average remuneration recorded in the first 12 of the 14 months prior to unemployment.

There are limits: the minimum equals 100% of IAS and the maximum to 2.5 IAS (article 30). The IAS is set at € 508.70 to 2025, annually reviewed. Already the Social Unemployment Subsidy has indexed value to IAS, adjusted to the composition of the household.

We recommend:

Complementary supports to unemployment

For situations of greater lack, there is the Social Ensemble Yield (RSI), regulated by Law No. 13/2003. This provision is addressed to people and families in extreme poverty, ensuring minimal income and a plan of social insertion.

The RSI is only granted when there are no more enough income and provided the aggregate furniture heritage does not exceed 120 IAS.

Families with children can accumulate previous support with family allowance provided for in Decree-Law No. 176/2003, whose value varies by setting echelons defined every year, helping to mitigate the impact of unemployment on minors.

Keep active while looking for work

During the perception of support, the beneficiary must remain available to accept proper job or attend training.

The CGD recalls that unjustified refusal may lead to the suspension or termination of the installment, pursuant to article 34 of Decree-Law No. 220/2006. The concept of “proper use” is described in article 34-A; The unjustified refusal of two offers, or vocational training, determines the loss of subsidy.

Vocational training courses, often proposed by employment centers, increase the hypotheses of relocation and may be a condition to maintain the subsidy.

Alternatives for those who are not entitled to support

When there is no right to unemployment allowance or social subsidy, it is possible to try alternatives, such as temporary work, small independent work or resorting to partnerships with employment agencies.

The underline that it is essential to maintain an up -to -date job search record and not give up looking for new opportunities.

Always updated information

To clarify doubts or simulate values, it is recommended to consult the IEFP Social Security Portal, where deadlines, forms, simulations and requirements of each support are found. Maintaining documentation organized and knowing rights is the first step in safely facing unemployment.
