A can raise doubts, apprehension and insecurity in parents. There is no manual with instructions that tell us how to act. Did I act correctly? Did I pay enough attention to my children? And was the quality of that time good? I asked these questions to myself several times. I believe many parents also do them, especially during children’s childhood. The charge we impose on the creation of our children is great, as if we were always in debt with something. Also, everyone wants to guess what parents should do. However, the truth is that there is no perfection and this generates a sense of frustration.
One way to reduce this feeling would be to make a diary of activities performed with children throughout the day. Thus, we would have more clarity about what was done and how we feel with these activities, both us and children. Another ally would be to seek different ways of interacting with the children. There comes a time when the lack of imagination wins, and what many people have done is to resort to websites and applications in search of new activities to interact with their children. This is the digital age.
At the same time, many research shows how it can be harmful to human relations, as people connect less among themselves. It is another complication in the already difficult task of caring. However, in some situations, the phone can become an ally rather than a villain – all depends on how it is used.
This June, I participated in one of the main conferences in the family economy area. The Seho Conference (SEHO of the Household) was held in Zaragoza, at. One of many presentations I watched caught my attention: Parental Time Promotion -investments in Preschool Children Through a Mindful Parenting Program. The researchers developed an application that focuses on improving and measuring the time spent between parents and children of preschool children, 4 and 5 years old. The app is called Minute (Mind Us Together).
Objectives involve improving the relationship between parents and children, their quality, reducing parental stress and increasing conscious parenting. In addition, we seek to measure the quality of time use in the relationship between parents and children, distinguishing activities with less or greater interaction and their impact on child development. The authors used this application at different times between 2020 and 2022. Parents participating in the intervention had children of 4 or 5 years enrolled in municipal schools in the region of Emilia-Romagna, Na.
The results presented so far point to differences between allocated time and quality on the days of the week and on weekends. Parents allocate more time, and of higher quality, with their children over the weekend. In addition, parents spend less time with their children than mothers during their working days; Even the quality time dedicated by mothers is twice the allocated by parents. However, this difference tends to disappear on weekends. This last result must be associated with the unequal distribution of time dedicated to childish care between mothers and fathers, in which women traditionally is the main caregiver.
The findings suggest that the mother still plays a major role in child development. I am curious to know what the results would be if this research was conducted in Brazil.
