Men die more than women with hypertension, diabetes and AIDS, reveals study of May.
Men are not only more likely than women to develop hypertension, diabetes and HIV, but are also more likely to die due to these diseases.
The conclusions are from a study in May in PLOS Medicine, show how sex -related health inequalities continue to affect results and suggest that current health policies often do not properly address these differences.
The team led by Angela Chang, from the University of Southern Denmark, analyzed data from dozens of countries to explore how these diseases affect men and women differently throughout the “Health Way” – A concept that encompasses exposure to risk factors, disease development, diagnosis, treatment and mortality, explains.
The study showed that in 200 countries in the case of hypertension, 39 in the case of diabetes and 76 in the case of HIV/AIDS, Men had higher rates of illness and death.
One of the main conclusions is that men are less likely to seek medical care or adhere to treatmentswhich contributes to the worst results observed.
In addition, the behavioral differences and lifestyle also play a role. The study indicated that men are generally more likely to smoke, while women have higher obesity rates and, in many regions, are more likely to adopt risk sexual practices.
The authors argue that these differences are not only explained by biological factors, but also by socially constructed gender papers that influence behavior and access to health care. Interventions rarely reflect the reality of these differences, and without detailed data disaggregated by sex, health systems risk not identifying who is being excluded from prevention, diagnosis and care.
