Two bears escaped from their room at Wildwood Devon Park, southwest, attracted by a nearby honey reserve, Wildwood Devon said on Tuesday (24). Mish and Lucy, two four-year-old puppies, “escaped from their venues yesterday (Monday) (…) and went straight to their food reserve,” said a spokesman for the establishment.
The two animals “enjoyed several items, including honey enough for one week, before being escorted safely back to the room less than an hour later” by the local team. “At no time were they a threat to the public,” although for security reasons, visitors were temporarily taken to a protected building, the park added.
The two puppies were monitored all the time by security cameras and equipment. After enjoying the food, Mish and Lucy “fell asleep” peacefully in her enclosure. Police were sent to the scene and an investigation is underway to find out how they managed to escape.
Wildwood Devon has over 16 hectares and specializes in British native species, especially wolves, foxes, lynances, reptiles and birds. The bears were extinguished in the 11th century.
Mish and Lucy arrived in England with a few weeks of life after being found in the mountains of Albania, abandoned by her mother during a snowstorm. After a fundraising campaign in 2020, the puppies were transferred to Wildwood in Kent (southeastern England) for six months before moving to Devon in 2021.
