The caress between General Walter Braga Netto and Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid in the Supreme Court (STF), held on Tuesday (24), showed not only the tension between the two accused in the investigation of attempted coup, but also the dispute between their defenses about what was actually said at the meeting.
On the one hand, lawyer Cezar Bittencourt, who defends Cid, told the newspaper S.Paulo Folha That the defendants did not face each other directly, denying any kind of provocation or verbal attack. “No one called the other a liar,” he said. “This is not a joke. Only the judge, the prosecutor and the lawyers can question. There is no room for both of them to talk.”
Still according to Bittencourt, if Braga Netto had made any direct accusation, “he was going to get there.”
The other side
The lawyer José Luis de Oliveira Lima, who represents Braga Netto, supports the opposite version. In an interview with journalists at the departure of the hearing, he said that the general, answering questions by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the Attorney General Paulo Gonet and the lawyers present, qualified Mauro Cid’s statements as “liars”-and that he did it twice, without being contested.

Divergences
The caressing was carried out after disagreements in the testimonies of the two involved. According to Mauro Cid, General Braga Netto would have participated in meetings with other military personnel to articulate scammer actions after the 2022 election, and passed R $ 100,000 in a box of wine.

The amount would be intended for the military of the radical wing known as “black kids”, aiming to foster social agitations and prevent the possession of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
Braga Netto, who has been pre -tried in Rio de Janeiro since December, has denied all charges and says it was a “courtesy visit.”
Next confrontation
Braga Netto and Cid was the first authorized by Alexandre de Moraes to clarify contradictions in the testimonials about the coup plot. Still on Tuesday, former Justice Minister Anderson Torres will be confronted with former Army commander Marco Antonio Freire Gomes, in a similar hearing.
