The inhabitants of Slovakia frightened an extremely tragic case when Eleven -year -old Tomáško, whose hospitalized at the National Institute of Children’s Diseases (NÚDCH) in Bratislava for infection Meňavkou Naegleria Fowleri, 17. At the swimming pool in Štúrovo confirmed dangerous améba
The National Reference Center for Hydrobiology at the Public Health Authority (ÚVZ) of the Slovak Republic analyzes a total of 105 samples taken during the three days of June at the Vadaš swimming pool in Štúrovo. In eight samples taken on 14th, 15th and 16th June June 23, the presence of a potentially pathogenic ameb of the Acanthamoeba (Akantameba) from the pool water and the surface water from the lake in the swimming pool area, the presence of a potentially pathogenic amoeb is confirmed. At the same time, ÚVZ staff confirmed from the total number of samples taken, in addition to the acantameb in ten samples, the presence of Ameb from the genus Naegleria. “The presence of the amoeb of the genus Naegleria was confirmed in pool water, in sterile from the pools and their accessories (gutters, filters) and also in the surface water sample in the lake in the swimming pool,” she said Červeňová. The precise specification of the species, ie whether it is the kind of Naegleria fowleri, is still working in the National Reference Center for Hydrobiology at the ÚVZ SR.
According to Červeňová, this type of laboratory examination requires enough time, as a precisely determined procedure must be followed to correctly determine the presence of a rare microorganism. Samples should be cleaned, isolate amoeba from a mixture of many kinds and obtain a pure culture for use in other methods. This process of cleaning and repeated cell transmission to a new, clean bowls requires a relatively long time.
Akantames can cause eye infections. Due to a possible corneal infection, they are particularly risk for people using contact lenses. These should not be used when bathing, as there is a risk of visual impairment and loss. Akantames can also cause ear infections, skin, soft tissues with their possible destruction. They are particularly dangerous for people with weakened immunity.
The checks at the swimming pool are related to With the death of an 11-year-old boy who infected the dangerous microorganism of Naegleria Fowleri. The boy took part in swimming training in Vadaš at the beginning of June. Hygienists took water samples for three days – Saturday, Sunday and Monday (14, 15 and 16 June 2025). The child was hospitalized on Saturday (14 June) with the symptoms of damage to the central nervous system.
