The president of, David Alcolumbre (Union Brazil-AP), who is Jewish, promulgated on Wednesday (25) the bill that sets on April 12 the “Friendship Day between Brazil and Israel”, after President Lula (PT) let the deadline for sanction.
Senate government leader Jaques Wagner (PT-BA) said he did not know why the Planalto Palace had ignored the sanction, but congratulated Alcolumbre for promulgation. Jewish, Jaques also made by the opposition against Lula.

Alcolumbre learned that the deadline for sanctioning the bill had expired on June 18 and warned, according to interlocutors, that it would make promulgation with great honor because the subject is expensive for him.
“The choice of date, April 12, dates back to 1951, when the first Brazilian diplomatic representation was installed in Israeli territory. It is, therefore, a historical milestone that reflects the long and solid bilateral relationship between our countries,” said Alcolumbre.
In a statement, Conib (Israeli Confederation of Brazil) issued a note in which “highlights the historical gesture of the Senate that strengthens ties” between the two countries. “Conib considers that the officialization of the date represents an advance in the relations between Brazil and Israel and values the role of the National Congress as a promoter of dialogue and the strengthening of international bonds,” says the text.
According to the note, the initiative reinforces a relationship built over decades, “supported by values such as democracy, diversity and cooperation” between countries.
