Budapest police have authorized an ultra -right -wing demonstration, which coincides with the alternative march to the pride raised for this Saturday (June 28) by the City Council of the capital of Hungary. The latter has been prohibited by the authorities last week, only a few months after. “They should not bother to prepare it [el Orgullo] This year, ”Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of the country of the European Union, threatened at the beginning of the year.
“We are playing democracy,” says Esther Martínez, director of the Relaim organization. He has been in Budapest for several days, and on Wednesday he participated in a round table on Orbán’s veto to pride. “The atmosphere was of deep frustration with the president of the European Commission [Ursula von der Leyen]who had the means to protect the pride and has not done so. ”
Yes, the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, will be in the Hungarian capital; The Ministers of Equality and Culture, Ana Redondo and Ernest Urtasun, in addition to the deputy Víctor Gutiérrez (of the PSOE) or several councilors of more Madrid, among others. “At least, 70 Eurodiputados who also confirmed her presence.” “If we allow Hungary to hill LGTBI+rights, we will probably see how other countries join. And we talk about rights that have cost a lot of work, effort and lives to get. You can’t take a step back, less in Europe,” says the Redondo socialist, shortly before traveling to Budapest. She returns Friday to Spain.
“When a country enters the EU, it assumes the obligation to respect democracy and fundamental rights,” the reclaim director affects. “If President von der Leyen looks the other way as rights are violated and treaties are not respected, not only betrays the LGTBIQ+ Hungarian community, it betrays us all,” he adds. During the presentation in which she participated, convened in the framework of pride, “everything was calm, it was an open event, but with controlled access.”
LGTBIFOBIC LAWS
The windows of the Hungarian capital do not wear rainbow colors. Nor is there a trace of flags for LGTBIQ+ rights or streets, or on balconies, or in public buildings, where and gender, as well as the political movements that represent them. “They are considered” propaganda. ”
Although LGTBIQ+ people have always been in the Diana de Orbán and their party (Fidesz’s ultraconservatives), who have controlled the government for 15 years, the offensive has intensified in the last five years. “In May 2020, [el Ejecutivo] He erased the legal recognition of the genre for trans people. Then, to pave the path to future restrictions, he promoted constitutional modifications, such as the exclusion of access to individual adoption for people LGTBIQ+, ”explains Eszter Polgári, lawyer and legal responsible for, the main organization of defense of rights of the Hungary Collective.
The Anti-LGTBIQ+ standard was approved in June 2021, imitating a similar promoted in Russia by Vladimir Putin, of whom Orbán is one of the main allies in the EU. The call propaganda law caused the European Commission to initiate a sanctioning procedure to Hungary. In addition, the case is in the EU Court of Justice [TJUE]which will predictably issue a ruling at the end of this year. Polgári awaits him with some illusion: “It will mark a precedent for the states that want to go back in rights, not only for people LGTBIQ+, but for all citizens.”
The application of propaganda law It has led to modifying other regulations, such as the protection of childhood. In this way, the Ultra Executive has censored in public space any mention “to sex change, the deviation regarding identity according to birth sex, as well as homosexuality.”
In March this year, Orbán took another step. “The propaganda law It is expanding to a new sphere: not only limits freedom of expression, now also restricts the right to meet. Again, it justifies it in the protection of children’s rights, ”says the legal responsible for Hatter Society.” It is these legal modifications that are being used to prohibit pride. ”
Before the veto to the official call, the mayor of the capital – (dialogue) – raised an alternative appointment without direct references to the group. The city’s police authorities published on June 19 a resolution in which they did not give their authorization for the event, since they considered that the law “in terms of meetings” did not comply with.
A “family event” of the extreme right
In addition to the normative offensive from the Government, in the pride of Budapest the nationalist group of the extreme right HVIM (youth movement for the 64 counties) has appeared. These extremists, after discovering the route of the march that the City Council had convened – which was kept secret for security and to avoid boycothing -, they have summoned their own demonstration, “a family event”, the same day, at the same time and with a similar route. Budapest police have given its approval; In the aforementioned resolution it is already detailed that there is another authorized demonstration, although it does not identify the organizers.
However, the HVIM ultras have published a statement on their website in which they confirm their presence in the streets of Budapest this Saturday: “We got the pride route and reserve it. If there is pride, it has us!” This group, founded in 2006 and has no apparent links with Fidesz, is defined “above partisan policy” and say they represent “traditional values and eternal ideas.”
Previously, in 2019, the radical group of the extreme right already tried to boycott the pride of Budapest – a case that is now being judged in the Hungarian courts -. They are also suspected of having coordinated violent actions in other editions of the event. HVIM has links with the ultra -nationalist and supremacist militia Blanca Légó Hungária, and the candidates to join their ranks are questioned about their knowledge in martial arts, although it is not a mandatory requirement. “Violence is one of the tools they use,” they warn From the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (global project against hatred and extremism).
