In connection with the arrival of the summer season, the police warn citizens of an increased risk of burglary in flats, family houses and recreational buildings. Statistics from recent years have confirmed that during the summer months the number of burglary theft is increasing, as many households remain empty longer. Police therefore call on citizens to be cautious and follow preventive measures. TASR informed the spokesman of the Presidium of the Police Force Roman Hajek.
In 2024, almost 3300 cases of burglary theft were recorded in Slovakia. In the previous year 2023, there were slightly more, more than 3600. In both of the years under review, the damage caused were close to EUR 10 million. The most common goals of the perpetrators were apartments and family houses, but a large part also represents recreational objects, such as cottages and cottages, which are often uninhabited for a long time.
According to the police, the most common mistakes before the police are unsecured windows, including cellars and roofing, not letting all doors locked and insufficient securing entrance points or leaving keys in commonly known places, such as a doormat or in a flower pot. Similarly, publishing information on departure and course of holiday on social networks and not informing neighbors about absence, which gives the impression of an abandoned household.
Therefore, police officers recommend locking all doors and windows thoroughly, using safety foils, bars or safety glasses, and install electronic security systems such as alarms, cameras and motion sensors.
They also advise to use time switches for lighting, radio or television to create the impression of an inhabited apartment. At the same time, they recommend asking trusted neighbors to select the post office, check the apartment and pay attention to the surroundings. “Do not publish information about your absence on social networks and share holiday photos after returning,” She delivered the police.
In case of finding a damaged lock, broken window or missing things after returning, it advises not to interfere with the building to maintain traces. “Call the police immediately to number 158 and wait for our arrival,” Hajek said.
