The transfer of the body of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 27, killed after falling on a trail on the Rinjani volcano, Indonesia, will not be funded by the federal government, Itamaraty confirmed on Wednesday to Estadão. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brazilian legislation “expressly prohibits” that this service be paid with public resources.

The folder stresses that, according to Decree No. 9,199/2017, “consular assistance does not comprise the cost of burial and transfer of national bodies that have died abroad, or hospitalization expenses, except for medical items and emergency care in humanitarian situations”.

The ministry states that, in case of death of a Brazilian citizen abroad, embassies and consulates can “provide guidance to family members, support their contacts with the local government and take care of the issuance of documents, such as the consular certificate of death, as soon as the mandatory procedures made by local authorities are finished”.

The death of Juliana, who was a publicist and resident of Niterói (RJ), generated commotion. The young woman’s body was found on Tuesday (24), after about four days of search-she suffered a fall while making the trail on Friday (20).

The family believes that there was “great negligence” in search, marked by frustrated attempts to reach the victim. In addition, according to witnesses, Juliana would have been left behind by the guide hired for the ride, and the disappearance was noted only hours later.

“If the team had arrived at her within 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive,” says the family in the Instagram profile created to share information about the case. “Now, let’s go after justice for her, because that’s what she deserves.”

The government of Indonesia, responsible for Monte Rinjani National Park, where the trail and the volcano is, justified the delay by stating that “evacuation involved collaboration between various agencies and volunteers, working on extreme ground with unpredictable climate.”

This Wednesday, local government teams completed the rescue work of the body of Juliana Marins. The information was confirmed by Monte Rinjani National Park through social networks.

“Evacuation involved collaboration between various agencies and volunteers, working on extreme land with unpredictable climate,” says the post.

According to the note, the removal process began at 6am (local time), with the preparation of all equipment for evacuation. Juliana’s body had to be lifted to be removed from the volcano.

At 1:51 pm, the entire rescue team and the body were at the top of the cliff, at the anchor site, and at 3:50 pm they reached Puffan, one of the main reference points of the Mount Rinjani Trail. Then they descended toward sembalun.
