Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orbán returned on Thursday to express his firm opposition to the entrance of Ukraine into the European Union. Upon arrival at the European Council in Brussels, the Hungarian leader stated that Kiev’s integration would pose a direct risk to the block’s safety.
“We would not like to be in a community with a country that is at war and represents an imminent danger to us,” Orbán told reporters, adding that “if Ukraine is admitted, war will be brought into the European Union.” For the head of the Hungarian government, this possibility is unacceptable.
From its perspective, allowing an armed conflict country to enter the community bloc would mean involving the entire EU in war. “If an EU member is at war, it means that the EU is at war. And that does not please us,” he said.
Orbán also took the moment to strongly criticize the European Union’s migration policies. The Prime Minister speaks of ineffectiveness of the measures discussed to this day.
“Hungary’s position is of resistance. We discussed a thousand times the way to change and make the migration regulation more effective and nothing happened. They are always entering,” he argued. “Therefore, if we join to have a pleasant meeting and a pleasant conversation, it will never result. The only solution is Hungary’s direct action: no one enters our territory without express permission of the Hungarian authorities.”
The Hungarian head of government went further and appealed to his European peers to adopt the same approach. Otherwise, he claims, “We will never be able to end this situation.” “What I suggest to my colleagues is simple: rebellion, rebellion, rebellion. That’s what the Hungarians are doing.”
