Brazilian states should continue with among their representatives in the House even after the approval of the complementary bill that.
The proposed proposal on Wednesday night (25) by 41 votes to 33. The text returns to appreciate the after approval of highlights.
Congressmen claim that the change fulfills a decision of the Supreme Court (STF) on the subject. In August 2023, the Court determined that the number of federal deputies per federative unit would be readjusted to the population measured by the 2022 census.
Instead of redistributing the 513 chairs between the states and the Federal District, which would lead part of them to lose representatives, the House decided to create 18 more, contemplating those who had a population increase.
No state will lose representatives in the House, and nine will win. They are Pará and Santa Catarina, who will have four deputies each other; Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Norte, which will earn two each; and Goiás, Ceará, Paraná and Minas Gerais, who will have one more deputy each.
By choosing to only add new vacancies, the Brazilian legislature is more disproportionate than if the update formula provided for in the same project applied, based on the population indicated in the 2022 census.
