Only one of 242 people aboard the Air India flight survived, but 19 people died in the city of Ahmedabad, when the plane crashed into an urban area
Indian researchers were able to recover data from the black boxes of a Boeing plane that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, one of the aerial tragedies in decades, the government said on Thursday (26). Only one of 242 people aboard the Air India flight survived the accident, but 19 people also died in the city of Ahmedabad, western India, when the plane crashed into an urban area. Two weeks after the air disaster, the Ministry of Civil Aviation reported that the researchers developed “the data extraction process” from the cabin’s voice recording and the flight data recorder. “The analysis is underway. These efforts aim to rebuild the sequence of events that occurred to the accident to identify the factors of development in order to improve air safety and prevent future incidents,” the ministry said in a statement.
The two black boxes were found days after the accident, but arrived only on Tuesday at the Air Accident Investigation Office in the Capital Nova Delhi. Air India said last week that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was “in good condition” and that the pilots were experienced and highly trained. The investigator has also recovered more than 100 cell phones to extract any recordings that “can provide clues about the final moments of the flight,” said Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik last week. The plane is being rebuilt in an unveiled place “to detect possible mechanical failures, structural problems or signs of explosion,” Malik told reporters.
