The Fish Market, in the Municipal Market of Olhão, hosts a round table, this Saturday at 18:30, dedicated to the theme “Past, present and future of tuna fishing in the Algarve”. The initiative is part of the exhibition “Network Heritage: A Fish, a community, two countries”, by the photojournalist Eduardo Martins, who documents the rehabilitation of this activity on the coast Algarvia.
The meeting will bring together former fishermen, researchers, industry experts and members of the local community, in a space for intergenerational dialogue on the historical and cultural importance of this secular practice, the challenges of today and the future of tuna fishing in the Algarve.

Tuna fishing is much more than a memory of other times. It represents a deep link between the human being and the sea, keeping alive ancestral techniques such as the frames, and carrying with them knowledge that shaped the daily life and identity of the region. Preserving this heritage also means giving voice to the stories of courage and resilience that have crossed generations, promoting their sharing and renewal.
The moderation of the session will be in charge of Eduardo Martins, documentary photographer and author of the project “Heritage in Network”. The participation of Alfredo Poço, administrator and captain of the Tunipex frame, Samuel Santos, also captain at Tunipex, and Augusto Rodrigues, former worker of the pumpkin frame are confirmed. Also together are José Marcelino Castanheira, Master in History of the Algarve and PhD in Heritage Studies, as well as the leader of the APE-Association for the Valorization of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Olhão, and Chief Celso António, of Lazarus Restaurant, in the Markets of Olhão, with vast international experience.

At the end of the conversation, chief Celso António will prepare a tuna ceviche live, which will be served to participants, at a time of tasting that combines tradition and innovation, ending the event with flavor and creativity.
Entry is free and open to all interested in the themes of the sea, collective memory and Algarve heritage.
The initiative is promoted by the markets of Olhão, in, and is part of the program “Live Cooking”, which runs in June and July 2025, with the objective of valuing the food and cultural heritage of the region.
