A skylight from the Mallorca de Palma International Airport in Spain collapsed last Tuesday over the luggage collection area, causing moments of panic among passengers. The fall was caused by debris and part of a wall in works on the upper floor, which suddenly ceded around 4:30 pm (3:30 pm in Lisbon).
At the time of collapse, the area was full of passengers waiting for its bags. The rubble hit automatic selling machines and four luggage rugs, but fortunately no one was injured.
Witnesses reported a large crash, followed by a dense cloud of dust, which generated alarm at the scene. An employee quoted by Mallorca’s diary admitted, “If the rubble had fallen over a person, we would be mourning a misfortune.”
Another worker described how the wreckage fell on a beverage machine, stressing that someone there could at the moment be seriously injured. It also mentioned the bad working conditions with which employees have dealt with due to ongoing works.
After the incident, a cleaning team was sent to the affected area, which removed the rubble and broken glass in about an hour.
Operator Aena Internacional said she is investigating the succeeding and will take the necessary measures, namely to investigate responsibilities.
